When Esben returns home to his beloved wife Kirstine and his son Karl after he fleed from the First World War, he finds a home that is no longer his: Gerhard, a German officer, has in the meantime won the heart of his wife Kristin and tries to take on the role of father for Karl. As his family tries to deal with his return, Esben sees the love of his life waning and his loyalty in question. He suddenly lives in a world in which his family is slowly disappearing from him and he is desperately fighting for his future with his wife and son. The film is based on a true story.
