"Berlin Blues" is a 2003 film comedy based on the novel of the same name by Sven Regener. The story is set in 1989 and follows the life of Frank Lehmann (Christian Ulmen), a disillusioned bartender in Berlin-Kreuzberg who feels torn between his unrequited love for waitress Katrin (Katja Danowski) and his desire to finally grow up.
The film is an affectionate homage to life in Berlin in the late 1980s, when the city was still divided by a wall and people were marked by political unrest and economic uncertainty. The characters in "Berlin Blues" are all quirky and endearing, and the film succeeds in capturing the feeling of life at that time with a lot of wit and charm.
Christian Ulmen is brilliant in the role of Herr Lehmann and manages to believably portray the facets of the dissatisfied yet dreamy protagonist. The supporting actors, especially Katja Danowski as Katrin and Detlev Buck as Mr. Karow, are also convincing with their authentic and amusing performances.
Director Leander Haußmann skillfully implements Sven Regener's original and gives the film a unique charm through his expressive staging and the use of period music. "Berlin Blues" is a film that captures the attitude towards life of an era and delights the audience with its loving and authentic characters as well as its humorous staging. A wonderful film that should not be missed.
