"Downfall" is a 2004 German historical drama by director Oliver Hirschbiegel. The film is about the last days of the Third Reich in the Führerbunker in Berlin and shows the disintegration of the Nazi regime from the perspective of Adolf Hitler's secretary Traudl Junge.
The actors are outstanding, especially Bruno Ganz as Adolf Hitler, who received much acclaim for his performance. The rest of the cast, including Alexandra Maria Lara as Traudl Junge and Corinna Harfouch as Magda Goebbels, also deliver first-rate performances.
The camerawork is impressive, especially in the dark and confined spaces of the bunker, where an oppressive atmosphere is created. The score by Stephan Zacharias is equally excellent and adds to the oppressive mood of the film.
"Downfall" was nominated for numerous awards, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The film won several awards, including the German Film Award and the European Film Award for Best Leading Actor (Bruno Ganz).
"Der Untergang" is a moving and harrowing portrait of the last days of the Third Reich, scoring with excellent performances, an intense atmosphere and a haunting musical score. A masterpiece of German cinema that is not only recommended for history buffs.
