"M.A.S.H." is a 1970 American film directed by Robert Altman. The film is set during the Korean War and revolves around a group of medics and nurses who work in a mobile field hospital of the U.S. Army. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Hooker and became a cult classic.
The plot focuses on the staff of the 4077th M.A.S.H. (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), specifically surgeons Capt. "Hawkeye" Pierce (played by Donald Sutherland) and Capt. "Trapper" John McIntyre (played by Elliott Gould). The two men try to rise above the war and its effects on their patients by getting drunk, chasing women and challenging their superiors.
Over the course of the film, the characters must deal with a number of challenges, including a superior who tries to sabotage their work and an injured soldier who is rejected by other doctors because of his race. The film also shows the terrible effects of war on patients and the psychological strain suffered by the M.A.S.H. staff.
In addition to Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould, the film's cast also includes Tom Skerritt, Robert Duvall and Sally Kellerman. The cinematography was handled by Harold E. Stine. The film was praised by critics and received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. "M.A.S.H." became a classic of anti-war cinema and influenced numerous other films and television shows, including the television series "MAS*H," which is based on the film.
