Flash Gordon is an adventure science fiction film based on the comics by legendary artist Alex Raymond. Director Mike Hodges brings to the screen the story of the protagonist Flash Gordon, who fights against the tyrannical ruler Ming the Merciless.
Sam J. Jones stars as the titular hero, who travels into space with his girlfriend Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) to save Earth from destruction by Ming (Max von Sydow). Along the way they encounter exotic creatures, mutant warriors and learn the secrets of the planet Mongo.
Cinematography by Gilbert Taylor and colorful sets and costumes designed by Danilo Donati give the film a unique and imaginative aesthetic. The score by Queen, composed for the film, adds to the unique atmosphere and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Film Song for the title song "Flash".
