In April 1805, the Napoleonic Wars spread by sea to the South American coast. Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship, the H.M.S. Surprise, an elderly British frigate are looking for the French privateer Acheron, which he wants to track down and destroy. After he learns in the first battle with his enemy that his ship has been defeated and has been badly damaged, the war seems over for him. But Captain Aubrey doesn't give up and with his ship's doctor he looks for a way how they can turn the tide of science and defeat the faster Acheron.
