"The Da Vinci Code" is a 2006 film by director Ron Howard, based on the bestseller of the same name by Dan Brown. It stars Tom Hanks as symbol researcher Robert Langdon.
The plot of the film revolves around the search for the Holy Grail and the revelation of a mysterious secret kept under lock and key by the Catholic Church. Langdon is asked for help by the police in Paris when a murder occurs at the Louvre Museum and a message in the form of symbols is found at the scene. Together with French cryptologist Sophie Neveu (played by Audrey Tautou), Langdon sets out to find the meaning of the symbols and stumbles upon a conspiracy that reaches into the highest circles of the church.
The two find themselves in a race against time when they discover that the murderer of the curator is the guardian of the Grail and wants to destroy the knowledge of the Holy Grail. In the process, they must solve numerous mysteries and uncover secrets in order to find and protect the Grail.
The film was controversial, especially from conservative circles, because it took up religious themes and sometimes criticized them. Nevertheless, "The Da Vinci Code" was a great success at the box office and led to further film adaptations of Dan Brown's novels. The film offers an exciting plot, a well-cast cast and captivating puzzles that keep the viewer enthralled.
