Vicco von Bülow (1923-2011) was a German cabaret artist, author and actor, best known by his stage name Loriot.
Vicco von Bülow was born on November 12, 1923 in Brandenburg an der Havel. After graduating from high school, he studied art history, German and English in Hamburg. During the Second World War he was drafted as a soldier and became a British prisoner of war.
After his release from captivity, von Bülow initially worked as a caricaturist for various magazines. From the 1950s, he appeared as a cabaret artist and quickly became one of the best-known representatives of his field in Germany. He became known primarily for his humorous and whimsical drawings and stories, which often tracked down the absurd in the everyday.
His best-known works include the "Loriot" series and the films "Oedipussi" and "Pappa ante portas". In these films Vicco von Bülow himself also often played the leading role. His work received numerous awards, including the Bambi, the Golden Lion of Venice and the Honorary Award of the German Television Prize.
Vicco von Bülow died on August 22, 2011, at the age of 87 in Ammerland on Lake Starnberg. He is still considered one of the most important representatives of German humor and cabaret.
