"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a monumental masterpiece in film history. Director Stanley Kubrick staged a visually stunning science fiction story in 1968 based on a short story by Arthur C. Clarke. The plot begins when a black monolith is found on Earth and a spaceship is sent to Jupiter to investigate its origin. During this flight, inexplicable phenomena occur and human consciousness seems to reach its limits.
The camera work and visual effects were groundbreaking for the time and made the film a milestone in film history. In particular, the implementation of weightlessness in space is impressive and shaped the genre. The music by composer Richard Strauss underscores the epic and mystical moments of the film.
The actors mostly act under futuristic helmets and costumes, but this does not detract from their performance. Especially the British actor Keir Dullea as astronaut Dave Bowman convinces with his interpretation of the increasing irritation and confusion in the inexplicable world he finds himself in.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1969 and received three additional nominations for screenplay, direction and score. The film influenced numerous works of science fiction and is still considered a milestone of cinematic art today.
