Alan Rickman (1946-2016) was an English actor and director known for his versatility and commanding presence on both stage and screen. He was born in London, England and grew up in a working-class family. Rickman originally pursued a career in graphic design but eventually turned to acting and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
Rickman's breakout role was as the villainous Hans Gruber in the 1988 action film "Die Hard," which led to him being cast in a number of other notable film roles including "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "Sense and Sensibility," and the "Harry Potter" series, in which he played the complex and misunderstood character of Severus Snape. He was also a prominent stage actor, having performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in various West End productions.
In addition to acting, Rickman was also a director, having helmed several stage productions and the 1997 film "The Winter Guest," which starred Emma Thompson. He was a well-respected actor and beloved figure in the entertainment industry, known for his wit, intelligence, and generosity. Rickman passed away in 2016 at the age of 69 due to pancreatic cancer.
