Biographie:
Graham Greene is an actor who was born on June 22, 1952 on the Six Nations Reserve in Brantford, Ontario. He is one of the most respected Indigenous actors of his generation and is descended from the Oneida Indians. Greene was born to Lilian and John Greene and grew up on the Six Nations Reserve.
Originally, Greene did not want to be an actor in his youth and worked as a sound engineer for Canadian rock bands from Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1970s. He later trained at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre's Native Theatre School in Toronto in 1974 and began gaining acting experience in Toronto and England.
Greene made his feature film debut in 1983 in the sports drama "Run For Your Life - A Sioux Wins for His Brothers" (original title: "Running Brave"). In 1985, he had a small role alongside Al Pacino in "Revolution."
Greene became known worldwide in 1990 for his role as Kicking Bird in "Dances with Wolves" alongside Kevin Costner. He was nominated for an Oscar for this role.
Subsequently, Greene regularly had important supporting roles in Hollywood productions such as "Maverick - The Colt on the Belt, an Ace up the Sleeve" and "The Green Mile". He also appeared in various TV series such as "L.A. Law - Star Attorneys, Tricks, Trials," "Murder is Their Hobby," "Outer Limits - The Unknown Dimension" and "Alaska of All Places."
Despite his frequent casting as Native Americans in films, Greene does not consider himself a trailblazer or ambassador for indigenous peoples. He has also appeared in other films, such as "Wind River" (2017) and "Antlers" (2021), as well as in the TV series "Defiance" (2013-2015).
Graham Greene has received several awards and nominations for his acting performance. In 1991, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Dances with Wolves". He received the Gemini Award for his performance in "The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon" and was nominated for the Gemini Award for his performances in "North of 60". In 2004, he received the Gemini Award "Earle Grey Award" for lifetime achievement.
Apart from his film career, Greene has also been successful in the theater. He received the Dora Mavor Moore Award for his role in Tomson Highway's "Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing." In 2007, he appeared on stage at the Stratford Festival in "Of Mice and Men" and played the central role of Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice."
