Lex Barker, born May 8, 1919 in Rye, New York, and died May 11, 1973 in New York City, was an American actor best known for his role as Tarzan in the 1950s.
Barker began his acting career on the stage before gaining a foothold in Hollywood. His big break came in 1949, when he took on the role of Tarzan in the film Tarzan's Magic Fountain. In the following years, he embodied the famous jungle hero in a total of five films, including "Tarzan and the Slave Girl" (1950) and "Tarzan's Peril" (1951).
Although Barker is best known for his portrayal of Tarzan, he also starred in other film genres, including westerns and adventure films. He appeared in films such as "Treasure in Silver Lake" (1962) and "Old Shatterhand" (1964), based on the popular Karl May novels.
After establishing his career in the United States, Barker went to Europe in the 1960s and starred in German and Italian productions. He appeared in several successful German Edgar Wallace thrillers and became a popular movie star in Europe.
