John Cleese is a British actor, comedian and screenwriter born on October 27, 1939 in Weston-super-Mare, England. He is best known as the co-founder of the comedy troupe Monty Python and as the creator of the sitcom Fawlty Towers.
Cleese studied at the prestigious Cambridge University, where he joined the comedy group Footlights and made his first appearances before an audience. There he also met his later Monty Python colleagues Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman.
The comedy troupe Monty Python was founded in 1969 and created some of the most important comedy works of the century in the 1970s, including the TV series Monty Python's Flying Circus and the films Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian. Cleese contributed significantly to the success of Monty Python and became known for his portrayal of numerous unforgettable characters such as the Prime Minister of the constituted People's Democracy of Judea or the mad fishmonger Arthur Pewty.
In addition to Monty Python, Cleese also had a successful career as an actor and screenwriter. He wrote and starred in the sitcom Fawlty Towers, which aired from 1975 to 1979 and was highly acclaimed by critics. He also appeared in numerous Hollywood films, including the comedies A Fish Called Wanda and James Bond 007 - The World Is Not Enough.
Cleese received numerous awards for his work, including a BAFTA award, an Emmy and an Oscar for Best Animated Short. In later years, he increasingly devoted himself to acting and appeared in various television and theater productions.
