Thornton began his career in the 1980s as a drummer in various rock bands before turning to acting. His breakthrough came in 1996 with his role as Karl Childers in the award-winning film "Sling Blade." He received numerous awards for his portrayal of the mentally disabled man, including an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
